Youth
Anti-Violence Conference
The
Women and Men's Resource Center of Long Beach City College
organized a Youth Anti-Violence Conference this past month,
partly with funds provided by EWI. Spokesperson Anita Gibbins,
EWI Vice President, helped organize this successful event
with the help of community partners and a group of about 15
high school students. The students developed skits that demonstrated
different violence scenarios - gang violence, domestic violence,
and peer violence. In one of the skits, the youth dies of
a gunshot wound. Afterwards the students talked with the audience
about what could have been done differently to prevent the
violence from occurring. In each skit, one of the students
portrayed the "conscience" so they could talk about
listening to that voice of reason in all of us.
After
the general session, they broke into smaller groups and talked
for about an hour how they could use this information in their
own lives. The day ended with a demonstration on the corner
of Pacific Coast Highway and Orange with signs the students
made to promote peace.
"I
was so pleased with the day and the work of these high school
students," exclaimed Anita. Many of the youth participating
in the conference and in the audience live in families currently
involved in gangs. Many youth in the audience came from a
group home and/or are on probation. "These were definitely
youth at risk and I can't help but believe that this event
made a difference," stated Anita.
EWI
is proud to have played a small part in the success of this
event. There is a short video
available for viewing that captures the spirit of these wonderful
students and brings out their powerful message. To view this
clip you will need Windows
Media Player, RealPlayer
or Quicktime.

Annual
Reading Rally
The
Long Beach Chapter of EWI hosted its annual Reading Rally
on October 25th, 2007 at Constellation Community Middle School
in Long Beach.
Director-at-Large Carmelita Pascua coordinated the very successful
event and was assisted by EWI Members Daphne Ching-Jackson
(Executive Director of Constellation Community Middle School),
George Jackson, Anita Gibbins, and Christine Janus, along
with volunteers from the Student Council at Long Beach City
College Pacific Coast Highway Campus. Twenty-six students
from grades 6-7 gathered at the school to learn how to compose
a story.
Authors
Bobbi and David Weiss returned to work their magic with their
unique brand of humor explaining how to create interesting
and entertaining stories by using the television series “The
Simpsons” as the model to illustrate the beginning,
middle and end of a story.
The children were encouraged to actively participate by selecting
characters, describing their personality traits, determining
what types of problems they might encounter and how they would
resolve their problems. After lively discussing several options,
the students were given time to create an outline and write
a story using these suggestions and characters as well as
their own imaginations. Volunteers were on hand to help answer
questions and provide encouragement. There was more than one
budding author in the group, as evidenced when several of
the students got up and read their stories aloud at the end
of the session.
Afterwards, the students were treated to an ice cream social,
served up by the volunteers from Long Beach City College.
The Rally concluded with each student being presented with
a Reading Rally T-Shirt and their very own book. The T-Shirts
were generously donated by EWI Member Sherry Brzeczka of K-Mart.
EWI Members donated $300 towards the purchase of books for
the students. In addition, EWI Member Amelia Nunez provided
a special donation of $130!
The Reading Rally is a wonderful way to introduce children
to the world of literature by helping to encourage and excite
their creativity and have a lot of fun at the same time. Thanks
to all who helped make this year’s Rally a huge success.

Annual
Installation Dinner
The
Annual Installation of the 2007-2008 Board of Directors held
at the Hyatt Hotel in Long Beach was a memorable event. Program
Director Siobhan Rathband of the Hyatt Hotel organized a spectacular
menu for the evening and Membership Director Kay Henrickson
installed a new member firm, SFE Investment Counsel, represented
by Teri McCasland. Our Special Guest, Dr. Byron Breland, Dean
of Student Affairs at Long Beach City College, presided over
the installation of the new board with descriptions of each
officers role for the coming year. The finale of the evening
was a unique and enjoyable presentation given by Chapter President
Anita Gibbins showing how much a family this chapter is with
a slide show and music. Congratulations to the 2007-2008 Board
of Directors. They will need the support of the entire membership
in order to succeed at their goals to make our chapter viable
and successful. To view pictures from the event, please click

EWI's
Annual Golf Tournament
This
year's Golf Tournament was another big success as we again
had golfers on the waiting list to get in on the fun. Local
area restaurants were set up to provide drinks and snacks
as the golfers made their way around the course. Afterwards,
everyone was treated to a delicious dinner as the banquet
and awards ceremony got underway in the brand new ballroom
facility. There were wonderful prizes to give away at the
Silent Auction and Raffle. This continues to be the largest
fundraising event of the year for EWI Long Beach and also
the most popular. Now it's time to rest and think about next
year's tournament.
