This thank you note from Dr. Virginia
Baxter of Long Beach City College illustrates how EWI helps
so many in their efforts to succeed and create a better life
for themselves and their families.
" Dear EWI Members – Classes
have started at Long Beach City College and Anita Gibbins
and I have the pleasure of seeing and meeting many students
who have benefited from your help with the proceeds of the
golf tournament. As we approach this year’s tournament,
I think it’s nice to see where our money is going. Here
is a note from Paola M. who rides her bike to the bus stop
and then takes the bus to LBCC. She arrived at the Liberal
Arts Campus on Wednesday but her check was at the Pacific
Coast Campus so she needed the money so desperately that she
took the bus to Willow and then rode her bike to PCC. Before
she left she wrote this nice note.
“To Executive Women International Members: I am writing
this short letter to let you know how very grateful I am that
you chose to bless me with your money. I am currently struggling
a lot and was beginning to feel hopeless. It is really hard
to be me, mainly because of wrong decisions and choices that
I have made in the past but I thank the good lord for blessing
me with your kindness and proving to me that there are still
good people in the world that care and are willing to help.
You have no idea what a blessing your donation has been to
me, it could not have come at a better time. Sincerely Paola.”
Sun Newspapers, a local community newspaper in Seal Beach,
CA recently featured an article on EWI Long Beach and it's
upcoming Golf Tournament on Sep 16th. Click here
to read the article. Many thanks to President Jenni Wilson
for getting recognition for the chapter for our philantrhopic
efforts.
A recent article of the Long Beach
Business Journal announced that EWI Members Linda duPlaine
Gray, of A Wedding Store, Jill Warino-Pringle and Christy
Warino, of Tracy's Bar & Grill, were highlighted in the
Who's Who in Women in Business Directory.
Interval House Crisis Center sent
their thanks recently for the generous donation EWI gave them
to assist in their efforts to help families in crisis. Here
is a copy of the letter
with a very special side note addressed to Dr. Virginia Baxter
of Long Beach City College.
In February, Jill Warino-Pringle
from Jill's Catering and Tracy's Bar and Grill entered a Sysco
food cook-off at the Pomona Fair Grounds. She came in 4th
out of 67 entries! Sunset Marquis won 1st place with a French
Chef. However, the previous day she tied with him and on the
following day, when she went up with him again, she won! Congratulations
Jill!
Carolyn Galbraith-Woodruff is excited
to be planning her granddaughter Stephanie's wedding, with
the help of Linda Gray of A Wedding Store. This is a good
example of the networking in action at EWI. Carolyn and Stephanie
Wright of CSULB will be going on an Alaskan Cruise in May.
They won the cruise in the auction that took place at the
last Golf Tournament. Networking and Friendship, courtesy
of EWI!
Jill Warino from Tracy's Bar &
Grill was awarded Volunteer of the Year from the Long Beach
Bar Association for the volunteer hours she gives to students
in need of direction as part of the Short Stop Program. The
event was held at the Gas Lamp Restaurant (one of our golf
sponsors) on Feb 26 and was attended by lawyers, judges and
many volunteers.
This is Jill's 2nd award for most hours spent with students
in the past 5 years. Students call to set up an appointment
with her and then visit her at the restaurant for an in depth
interview. Most of these kids are at risk and look to someone
to help them believe in themselves.
Carolyn Galbraith-Woodruff will proudly display her plaque
and awards signed by the Mayor and other dignitaries of Long
Beach.

EWI
Philanthropy
EWI is proud to be able to assist
the following organizations in their work to help promote
educational efforts and better lives for those who so desperately
need it: New Hope Grief Support, Womanshelter, We Care, Interval
House, Constellation Community Middle School and Long Beach
City College. We have invited representatives to come to our
January meeting and speak to our membership on their goals
and accomplishments.
EWI of Long Beach Hosts Las Presidentes
Pasadas
On Saturday, October 17, 2009, EWI
of Long Beach hosted the bi-annual Las Presidentes Pasadas
meeting at The Aquarium of the Pacific. Las Presidentes Pasadas
is an organization of past presidents from the southern Californian
Chapters of EWI. Long Beach, Los Angeles, Pomona Valley, San
Diego, and San Fernando Valley rotate hosting duties. Forty-five
past Chapter presidents and guests represented their Chapters
at this event.
Bette Gray, Sustaining Member, shares more from the meeting
and event:
"The day began with a social
hour followed by private 'Behind the Scenes Tours' with groups
of 20. Following the tours was a lovely lunch...[Afterwhich]
a brief business meeting was conducted which included introductions
and a corporate update by EWI Corporate Education/Professional
Development Director Darlene Banogon, a past president of
EWI San Diego. The participants were then allowed to enjoy
the aquarium on their own.
"Las Presidentes Pasadas provides the opportunity to
renew friendships built over years of participation in the
governance of EWI, but it is just one aspect of the networking
benefits of EWI. Participation and the willingness to serve
in a leadership position can create personal benefits which
last for a lifetime. The next meeting of LPP will be May 15,
2010 to be hosted by EWI Los Angeles."
The Annual EWI Open
Our annual Golf Tournament was held
on Sep 16th and was a huge success. Check back for a full
recap of the days activities.
Scholarship Awards Dinner
The annual Shcolarship Awards Dinner
was held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Long Beach
this past May. This event is one of the most popular venues
held by EWI Long Beach and attendance, as usual, was high.
The scholarships that are awarded to Long Beach City College
students represent what EWI Long Beach is all about. Our golf
tournament, scheduled for Sept 16th, raises the majority of
the funds used for these scholarships. Recipients attending
the event share their stories of struggle and adversities
they face every day in order to get an education and improve
their lives and the lives of their families. It is impossible
not to be moved by these incredible women and men after hearing
them speak. Here are a few pictures
from this year's event.
At the Races 2009
The May meeting and fundraiser at Los Alamitos
Race Track was a huge success and gets more popular with members
and their guests each year. Below, EWI members posed with
the winning horse from the EWI Race.
Celebrating 60 Years
The Long Beach Chapter celebrated
a milestone on Feb 18, 60 years of serving the community,
promoting businesses and creating connections. The festivities
took place at the Old Ranch Country Club in Seal Beach. Members,
both new and old, came out to share their inspirational stories
and experiences. During the social hour and check-in, chapter
members mingled with guests from our sister chapters in Los
Angeles, San Diego and San Fernando Valley. The San Diego
Chapter will be celebrating their 60th Anniversary next year
and hope to see many of us in attendance. There was a slide-show
depicting EWI over the years, courtesy of former President
Anita Gibbins. Martha Ustick and others brought in photo albums
and there was a photo collage on display showing EWI events
both past and present. Chapter President Jenni Wilson welcomed
the guests and led them in the Flag Salute and Invocation
before introducing the guest of honor, former mayor of Long
Beach Beverly O'Neill. Mrs. O'Neill spoke about the good work
done to help promote education and assist women and men to
achieve their goals through the EWI Scholarship program. She
spoke warmly of her association with EWI and many of it's
members. After a delicious dinner of Arugula Salad and Chicken
Florentine, the wait staff served slices of the special Anniversary
cake, graciously donated by Board Member Linda Gray of A Wedding
Store. We then heard from Corporate Board Member Darlene Banogon
from the San Diego Chapter who has a long history with and
is a great supporter of the Long Beach Chapter. Her remarks
were followed by former EWI Executive Joseph Prevratil from
the Queen Mary. Board Member Stephanie Wright gave a moving
tribute on what being a part of EWI has meant to her and how
it has changed her life. Long standing members were recognized
and honored with the gift of a red rose. To see photos of
this memorable event, click here.
